CRL Chepe’s Rolling Library

The iconic train El Chepe is embarking on a groundbreaking initiative to become a mobile library, promoting knowledge and connectivity. The Rolling Library project will travel through Mexico’s Copper Canyon, bringing books, internet, and workshops to remote villages and indigenous communities. The Rolling Library will house a diverse collection of books, as well as classroom-type workspaces with full internet access. The modular design creates different spaces for personalized reading experiences, as well as being capable to transform into projection and movie rooms. All these different functions challenge stereotypes and promote equal access to culture, breaking the confinement of girls to the home and boys to work, a characteristic still found in indigenous communities.

El Chepe’s journey serves as a catalyst for intellectual growth, empowering communities with knowledge and opportunities. It also fosters social connections and cultural interactions by facilitating the exchange of books between different communities. Residents have the opportunity to actively participate in the library’s activities, such as organizing reading circles, storytelling sessions, movie screenings, and workshops. The mobile nature of the Rolling Library is designed to foster diverse activity cycles, ensuring a dynamic and engaging experience for all.
